Located in Palm Beach County, Delray Beach is a coastal city in the Miami metropolitan area with an estimated population of 66,255. In its early history, Delray Beach began with with the construction of the Orange Grove House of Refuge in 1876, in which the house derived its name from the grove of mature sour orange and other tropical fruit trees found at the site. In 1884, settlement began when African-Americans from the Panhandle of Florida purchased land with a little inland from the Orange Grove House of Refuge and began farming.
